Empowering Third
Culture Teens

Welcome to a space designed specifically for third culture teens – a community where uniqueness meets unity. Our mission is to guide you on a journey of self-discovery, embracing the enriching experiences and challenges that come with growing up in diverse cultural environments.

The Unique Journey of Third Culture Teens

A third culture teen refers to an individual who has spent a significant portion of their formative years living in a culture different from their parents' or passport country, often due to their parents' work assignments or international experiences. This unique upbringing leads to the blending of the teen's parents' culture (the first culture) and the host country's culture (the second culture), resulting in the emergence of a "third culture." Third culture teens often share common experiences, challenges, and a sense of belonging with peers who have similar multicultural backgrounds. They navigate a complex interplay of identities and perspectives, fostering adaptability, empathy, and a global outlook.

Navigating Identity and Connection

Third culture teenagers, or TCKs, weave through a complex tapestry of cultural influences, often leading to challenges in identity and belonging. Their exposure to diverse cultures, while enriching, can sometimes blur the lines of cultural norms and cause feelings of not fully fitting in anywhere. They may grapple with defining "home," experience educational disruptions, and face the emotional toll of frequent relocations. Misunderstandings arise from cultural differences, and even returning to familiar territories can induce reverse culture shock. However, with a globally informed counselor, these unique challenges can be navigated, leveraging their rich experiences for personal growth.

Our sessions

For adolescents aged 13 to 15, engaging in counseling sessions can be incredibly beneficial, provided that they:

- Have the capacity to reflect on their thoughts and actions.
- Recognize an issue and are open to discussing and sharing their feelings.
- Express an interest in speaking with a counsellor.

It is crucial for you, as a parent, to carefully consider whether your child is prepared for talk therapy or if exploring alternative support methods might be more appropriate. This evaluation can be based on your child's ability to engage in meaningful conversations with adults and their capacity to comprehend and participate in these discussions. If you conclude that your teenager may not yet be ready for talk therapy, seeking parental support sessions could be a valuable alternative. These sessions are designed to equip you with strategies to address your child's challenges effectively.

At MondoClinic, we advocate for parental involvement in the counseling process for children under 15. It is common for teens aged 15 to 18 to determine the need for parents to be fully or partially engaged in the sessions.

- Individual sessions for the teen (45 minutes), followed by a parent follow-up (15 minutes).
- Parenting support sessions (55 minutes).

Questions

How many sessions will I need?

Your counselling sessions are tailored to your specific needs and can span from a few sessions to several years, depending on your progress. Many clients report significant improvement after 5-10 sessions and often feel ready to apply the skills they've learned independently after 10-20 sessions.

How can I determine if the counsellor is the right fit for me?

Ensuring the proper connection with your counsellor is crucial for a successful journey. To fully benefit from the treatment, you should feel a strong sense of chemistry, trust, and security in the counselling relationship. To help you make this important decision, you're encouraged to reach out and schedule a preliminary call before booking your initial session. This lets you gauge whether I am the right match for your needs.

Contact us

I like what you offer, but I wonder if it's good for me.

While time can bring temporary relief, counselling offers proactive strategies to manage the present and prevent future issues. It's natural to feel hesitant, but you don't have to go it alone. Let's discuss your concerns and make the therapy process comfortable.

How do I feel after my first sessions?

You often feel emotionally exposed and vulnerable in the days following our first sessions, especially if you have opened up about things you don’t usually talk about. If this happens to you, know that it’s completely normal. It is also known as a “vulnerability hangover.” It might make you feel you don’t want to return for the next session. See if you can work through that feeling and give it another try. We will then talk about your experience in the next session.

What is the cost of counselling sessions?

Adults:
A standard 55-minute adult session is CHF 180, with payment due at the session unless other arrangements are made.

Youth:
Youth often find shorter sessions more manageable due to the intensity of discussing feelings. The fee for a 45-minute counselling session is CHF 160.
Self-paying students can access a 45-minute session at a rate of CHF 120.
