Play therapy is a unique and special time for children. It is non-judgmental, non-directive, and non-interpretive. Play is crucial for children's physical, emotional, and social development. It nurtures their imagination and creativity while building confidence and concentration. Through play, children learn to make friends and explore their world, gaining the ability to learn from their mistakes safely. Play therapy allows children to understand and express their feelings, helping them realise it's okay to have emotions and teaching them how to manage those feelings safely and constructively.
Play therapy is used to address emotional and behavioral problems and communication issues, including those related to autism, language delays, and challenges with social integration.
Play therapy takes place in a specially designed play therapy room. It incorporates various types of play through different tools, such as art, playdough, games, role play, puppets, sand play, construction, stories, creative visualization, and talking. It provides children with a safe space to play and explore their feelings, supported by a trusted adult. Before the therapeutic journey begins, an assessment of the child’s strengths and difficulties (SDQ) is conducted to help set therapeutic objectives tailored to the child's needs.
Play therapy addresses the needs of children experiencing behavioral and emotional difficulties, as well as complex life challenges, including anxiety, phobias, withdrawal, low concentration, low self-esteem, troubled peer or adult relationships, bullying, attachment issues, ASD, ADHD/ADD, hospitalisation, and bereavement.
Play therapy is beneficial for children between the ages of 5 and 11.
Therapeutic play sessions occur in the same room at the same time each week, with a minimum of 6 sessions. Each session lasts 50 minutes. Predictability and consistent participation in play therapy sessions help the child and support the achievement of the defined goal.
The session is conducted one-on-one with the therapist.
Play therapy is based on trust, and the therapist does not disclose what happens during the sessions. The parent can ask the child who may choose to share. This rule does not apply if the child shares information with the therapist that indicates a danger to themselves or others.

Play therapists often provide age-appropriate strategies for parents to use at home to support their children, such as creative play techniques, emotional expression, routine and structure and communication tips.
The first part of the grief session will be a clarifying conversation. It will give me an overall impression of where you are in your grief and how I can best help you.A few helpful tips for the first session:
In play therapy, you can expect a supportive environment where your child can freely express themselves through play. The therapist will use various play techniques, such as art, games, role-playing, and storytelling, to help your child explore their emotions, behaviours, and experiences. The sessions are usually held one-on-one in a consistent, safe space.
The process is non-judgmental and child-centred, allowing your child to lead the play while the therapist provides guidance and support. Over time, play therapy can help your child develop better emotional regulation, communication skills, and coping mechanisms.
As a parent, you may not receive detailed reports about what happens in each session, as confidentiality and trust are vital components of the therapy. However, the therapist will keep you informed about your child’s progress and any significant issues that arise, especially if there are safety concerns.
The school can refer a child to play therapy with parental consent. The teacher also needs to complete a questionnaire. Before starting the treatment, a phone conversation with the parent will occur, and the parent must also fill out a questionnaire.
Play therapy takes place in the therapy room on the same day each week, with a minimum of 10 sessions lasting 50 minutes.
When a child struggles to manage confusing feelings and experiences, it can impact their family life, relationships, and educational performance and cause significant distress. Early intervention through Play Therapy can address early behavioural issues while supporting the child's social, cognitive, psychological, and emotional development and resilience.

While time can bring temporary relief, counselling offers proactive strategies to manage the present and prevent future issues. It's natural to feel hesitant, but you don't have to go it alone. Let's discuss your concerns and make the therapy process comfortable.
You often feel emotionally exposed and vulnerable in the days following our first sessions, especially if you have opened up about things you don’t usually talk about. If this happens to you, know that it’s completely normal. It is also known as a “vulnerability hangover.” It might make you feel you don’t want to return for the next session. See if you can work through that feeling and give it another try. We will then talk about your experience in the next session.
